Historical Forex Data Download
Historical forex data at one-minute resolution for major and cross currency pairs, gold, silver, palladium, platinum, copper, oil and stock indices. Higher timeframes from M5 to monthly are built from the M1 candles.
Download standard CSV, or the layout MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 read. MetaTrader builds its higher timeframes from M1 by itself, so M1 is usually all it needs. Every update is checked before a file is replaced: FX pairs, gold, silver and oil against their source with an exact checksum of every candle, the other metals and the indices for time order, duplicate minutes and impossible prices.

Importing the files into MetaTrader 4 and 5
MetaTrader 4: choose the MetaTrader 4 format, then in the terminal open Tools, History Center, select the symbol and the M1 period and press Import. The file has no header row; the columns are date, time, open, high, low, close and volume.
MetaTrader 5: choose the MetaTrader 5 format, create a custom symbol and import the file as bars. The columns follow the header MetaTrader 5 writes itself when it exports bars.
These layouts follow what the platforms write. Please try a small file first, because every broker build behaves a little differently.
About the data
- M1 midpoint candles, (bid + ask) / 2. Only completed candles are stored. All times are UTC.
- Volume is the number of price updates (ticks) inside the minute, not traded volume. Spot FX has no central volume.
- A minute without any price update has no candle. Gaps are left as gaps, nothing is forward-filled.
- There are no separate bid/ask prices and no spread column. The MetaTrader 5 file writes 0 in the spread column.
- Coverage starts in 2005 for FX and oil, in 2007 for gold and silver, and between 2005 and 2015 for the other metals and the indices, each from the year its one-minute history became dense. Earlier quotes exist but are too sparse to be usable.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I get historical forex data for backtesting?
This page offers one-minute (M1) candles for 50 instruments: major and cross currency pairs, metals, oil and stock indices, from 2005 to 2026-10-30. You choose the instruments, the timeframes and the date range, and get CSV files or files in the MetaTrader 4 and 5 layouts.
Which formats and timeframes are available?
Standard CSV with ISO dates, the MetaTrader 4 History Center layout and the MetaTrader 5 custom symbol layout. The data is stored as M1; M5, M15, M30, H1, H4, D1, W1 and MN1 bars are built from it on request. MetaTrader builds its own higher timeframes from M1, so M1 is usually all you need there.
How accurate are the candles?
For FX pairs, gold, silver and oil every update compares each year with the source: the number of candles, the first and last minute, and an exact checksum of every open, high, low, close and volume. A file that does not match is not published. For palladium, platinum, copper and the indices each file is checked for time order, duplicate minutes and prices of zero or less, and the newest days are read again on every update to pick up corrections. Gaps (minutes without any price update) are left as gaps and nothing is forward-filled.
Is this tick data? Are bid, ask and spread included?
No. These are midpoint candles, (bid + ask) / 2, and the volume is the number of price updates inside the minute, not traded volume. There are no separate bid and ask prices and no spread column; the MetaTrader 5 file writes 0 in the spread column.
Which time zone are the timestamps in?
All timestamps are UTC, exactly as the candles are published; nothing is shifted. Higher timeframes are built on the UTC clock: a D1 bar starts at 00:00 UTC, a W1 bar on Sunday 00:00 UTC and an MN1 bar on the 1st of the month.
How far back does the data go?
Candles start in 2005 for FX pairs and oil, in 2007 for gold and silver, and between 2005 and 2015 for the other metals and the indices, each from the year its one-minute history becomes dense. Earlier quotes exist but are too sparse to be useful. The data on this page ends 2026-10-30.
How often is the data updated?
Once a week. New candles are added and every year of every instrument is checked against the source again before a file is replaced.
