Reading the columns
open_interest is the total number of open contracts. Each trader group has a long, a short and, where the report publishes it, a spread count. The net position of a group is its long minus its short. The total reportable and non-reportable columns split all open interest into large traders who must report and small traders who do not.
The legacy report groups traders as commercial (hedgers) and non-commercial (mostly funds and speculators). The financial futures report separates dealers, asset managers, leveraged funds and others. The commodity report separates producers and merchants, swap dealers, managed money and others. The same market can appear in more than one report type; they are separate files.
About the data
- One file per contract and report type, one row per weekly report. Futures only.
- report_date is the Tuesday the positions are as of. The report is published a few days later, normally the following Friday, and later after a holiday. For a historical test, use the publication day, not the Tuesday.
- Legacy reports go back to 1986. The financial futures and commodity reports start in 2006.
- Position counts are numbers of contracts. Net position is long minus short. A few non-reportable counts are negative in the published data and are kept as published.
- The same market can be in more than one report type; each is a separate file with the columns that report publishes.
- A contract marked discontinued has not been reported for months. Its history is kept.
Frequently asked questions
What is COT data?
The Commitments of Traders (COT) report is a weekly count of the futures positions held by groups of traders: how many contracts they hold long, short and as spreads, and the total open interest. It shows how commercial hedgers, funds and dealers are positioned in currencies, metals, energy and agricultural markets.
Which reports and markets are included?
The catalogue has 733 contracts across three report types. The legacy report splits traders into commercial and non-commercial and is available for 733 contracts since 1986. The financial futures report (dealer, asset manager, leveraged money, other reportable) covers 7 currency contracts since 2006. The commodity report (producer or merchant, swap dealer, managed money, other reportable) covers 661 commodity contracts since 2006.
What date does each row carry, and when was it known?
report_date is the Tuesday the positions are as of. The report is published a few days later, normally on the following Friday, and later when there is a holiday. For a historical test that must only use what was known at the time, use the publication day and not the Tuesday, or the test will use information that was not yet public.
Is it futures only or futures and options combined?
Futures only. Each row is one contract in one weekly report, with the position counts that report type publishes; columns a report type does not publish are not in its files.
Which currencies are covered?
The euro, British pound, Japanese yen, Australian dollar, Canadian dollar and New Zealand dollar contracts, and the US dollar index, together with gold, silver and the commodity markets. Every contract is listed in the catalogue above with the first and last report we hold.
What do I get when I download?
A zip file with one CSV per contract and report type, a catalogue file describing them and a README. Each CSV has one row per weekly report with the contract, the position counts and the open interest.
How often is the data updated?
Once a week. The history is checked against its original, contract by contract and column by column, and the newest weeks are added when they are published.
